Solar Bug Zapper Care Guide: Cleaning and Storage Tips

Your Murutoi solar bug zapper is built to handle real outdoor conditions — it's IPX5 waterproof, with a flame-retardant ABS shell and reinforced aluminum frame. But a little regular upkeep goes a long way toward keeping it working at its best, and toward getting it through the off-season in good shape. Here's what actually needs attention.

Cleaning the High-Voltage Grid

Dead insects and debris build up on the grid over time. Before cleaning:

  1. Switch the unit to OFF using the manual ON/OFF switch.
  2. Let it sit for a few minutes.
  3. Use a soft, dry brush (an old toothbrush works fine) to gently sweep debris off the grid wires.
  4. Avoid spraying water directly into the grid housing — wipe the exterior with a barely damp cloth if needed, and let it dry fully before switching back on.

Cleaning the Solar Panel

A dusty or dirty solar panel charges less efficiently. Wipe the panel surface with a soft cloth, using plain water or a mild soap solution if it's especially grimy. Avoid abrasive pads or harsh chemical cleaners, which can scratch the panel surface and reduce how much sunlight it captures.

Checking the Charging Port

Both the G8 and G8L charge via Solar + USB (DC Round Plug) dual charging — a round-pin connector, not USB-C. Keep the port free of dirt and moisture, and always use the included cable rather than forcing a USB-C connector into it. If you're storing the unit for a while, a quick check that the port is clean and dry before your next charge is worth the ten seconds it takes.

What You Don't Need to Maintain

It's worth knowing what's not on your to-do list: the dual 365–395nm UV LEDs are sealed into the unit and are not a replaceable or user-serviceable part. There's no bulb to swap out — as long as the grid and panel are clean, the UV LEDs will keep doing their job.

Battery Care for Storage

The G8 and G8L both use 18650 Li-ion cells (7500mAh x2 on the G8, 9600mAh x3 on the G8L). Like most lithium batteries, they hold up best in storage when they're not left fully drained for long stretches. A couple of general good habits:

  • Give the unit a full charge (via solar or the USB DC cable) before putting it away for an extended period.
  • If you're storing it for several months, an occasional top-up charge helps keep the battery in good condition.

Storing It for the Off-Season

When it's time to bring your zapper in for the season:

  1. Clean the grid and panel as described above.
  2. Make sure the unit is fully dry — even though it's IPX5 rated for outdoor use, you don't want to store it damp.
  3. Charge the battery before storage.
  4. Switch it to OFF.
  5. Store it indoors, in a dry space out of direct sunlight, along with the hanging chain, ground stakes, and 20ft solar extension cable so everything's together when you set it back up.

FAQ

Q: Can I hose down the grid to clean it? A: It's best to avoid spraying water directly into the grid housing. Use a soft dry brush for debris, and a barely damp cloth on the exterior only.

Q: Do I need to replace the UV LEDs at some point? A: No. The UV LEDs are sealed into the unit and aren't a replaceable part.

Q: What cable do I use to recharge it? A: Use the included DC Round Plug cable — the charging port is a round-pin connector, not USB-C, so a standard USB-C cable won't fit or work correctly.

Q: Is it okay to leave it outside all winter since it's waterproof? A: The unit is IPX5 rated for rain and outdoor moisture, but for off-season storage we'd still recommend bringing it in clean and dry rather than leaving it out unused for months.
