Zapper Not Turning On? 5 Fixes Before You Give Up
If your Murutoi solar bug zapper won't power on, don't send it back just yet. Most "dead" units aren't actually broken — they're stuck on one of five common issues. Work through this checklist in order; it takes about five minutes.
1. Check the battery charge first Solar bug zappers store power in an internal battery, and a fully drained battery is the single most common reason a unit won't respond. If your zapper has been indoors, in a box, or under heavy shade for more than a day or two, the battery may simply be too low to start. Give it 6–8 hours of direct sunlight, or connect it to the charging cable, before assuming there's a hardware fault.
2. Confirm the charging cable is fully seated Murutoi units charge via a USB-to-DC round-pin cable — not USB-C. Because the connector looks similar to USB-C at a glance, it's easy to press it in at a slight angle and think it's connected when it isn't. Unplug it, look at the port, and reinsert it straight until you feel it click into place.
3. Hold the power switch/button for a full press A quick tap isn't always enough. On many solar zappers, the power button needs a firm, complete press (and on some models, a 2–3 second hold) to register. Try again slowly, and watch for an indicator light response before releasing.
4. Test it in low light, not indoors under a lamp Some solar-powered zappers include a built-in light sensor that keeps the unit off during daylight hours to save power for nighttime operation — if your model has this feature, testing it on a bright desk or under indoor lighting may make it look "off" when it's actually working as designed. Try again at dusk or in a shaded/dark room before troubleshooting further.
5. Check that the cleaning cover is fully closed If your model has a removable cover for emptying the collection tray, check whether it's fully seated — on units with a cover safety interlock, the unit won't power on unless the cover is completely closed. After cleaning, press the cover down firmly on all sides until it clicks or sits flush.
Still not working? If you've gone through all five steps and the zapper still won't respond, it's likely a hardware issue rather than user error.
